The most common causes of visual impairment are:

  • Uncorrected refractive errors (43%), that include:
    • Near sighted
    • Far Sighted
    • Presbyopia
    • Astigmatism
  • Cataracts (33%), which is the most common cause of blindness
  • Glaucoma (2%)
  • Other disorders that may cause visual problems including
    • Age related macular degeneration
    • Diabetic retinopathy
    • Corneal clouding due to disease or dystrophy
    • Various retinal diseases and disorders
    • Childhood blindness
  • Visual impairment can also be caused by
    • Problems in the brain due to stroke, neoplasms, or disease
